"Volevo ritagliare l'azzurro del cielo" Carlo Scarpa
The requirement of the project was to design a removable expositive pavilion to be built with natural materials. The site is located in front of the National Gallery of Modern Art, in Rome.
Final solution has a clear distribution with two expositive boxes connected by a corridor.
The entry way is composed by staggered large steps and by a decomposing wall that attracts people walking along the street. Each panel of the wall can be used as a showcase indicating which exposition is currently going on. Three vertical banners in front of the building advise drivers as well.
Vertical corner windows round from the walls to the roof giving indications about which kind of art could be exposed on the inside. In this case the pavilion is designed for sculptures who needs natural light for a better exposition.
The structure is wooden made and, except for little foundations, does not need concrete to build it up. The dry mounting will save time for assembly and anable pavilion movement. Stiffenings make the doubled pillars stronger to avoid pillars warping under load pressure. The beams are bolted between the pillars.
To preserve internal temperature, outer and inner skins are divided by thermal insulation. The opening overlooking the inner garden, in collaboration with the pavilion entry door, permits a good natural ventilation.
